To vote in the 2026 Local Government elections, you must be correctly enrolled. 

The electoral rolls for the elections close at: 6pm, Thursday 10 September 2026 

If you are already enrolled on the State electoral roll, you are automatically enrolled for the local government area in which your enrolled address is located. 

If you have recently moved, you should check and update your enrolment before the rolls close. 

Am I eligible to enrol? 

You are eligible to enrol on the State electoral roll if: 

• you are an Australian citizen; 
• you are 16 years of age or older; and 
• you have lived at your current address for at least one month. 

You may enrol when you are 16 or 17, but you cannot vote until you are 18. 

Certain exceptions apply, including for some prisoners serving sentences of more than three years. British subjects who were enrolled on a Commonwealth electoral roll on 25 January 1984 may also remain eligible. 

Do I have to enrol? 

Yes. If you are 18 or older, an Australian citizen and otherwise eligible, you are required to enrol. 

People aged 16 or 17 may enrol in advance, but enrolment is not compulsory until they turn 18. 

What if I own property in another council area? 

Local government elections also have additional enrolment provisions. 

If you own or occupy land in a municipal area but are not enrolled on the State roll in that area, you may be eligible to enrol on that council’s General Manager’s roll. 

A nominated representative of a corporate body that owns or occupies land in a municipal area may also be eligible. 

Applications for the General Manager’s roll must be lodged with the relevant council before the close of rolls. 

Do I have to vote? 

Yes — if you are on the State electoral roll. 

Voting at Tasmanian local government elections is compulsory for electors on the State roll. You may be fined if you fail to vote without a valid and sufficient reason. 

Voting is not compulsory for electors who are enrolled only on a council’s General Manager’s roll.
