Clarence is a remarkable place to call home.
Located on the eastern shore of the River Derwent, Clarence stretches from Otago and Risdon in the north, through Bellerive, Rosny, Lindisfarne and Howrah, to the growing communities of Rokeby and Lauderdale, the South Arm Peninsula, Seven Mile Beach, Cambridge and the historic village of Richmond.
Today, almost 64,000 people call Clarence home, making it one of Tasmania’s largest and most diverse communities.
Covering approximately 378 square kilometres and with around 191 kilometres of coastline, Clarence brings together urban neighbourhoods, rural communities, coastal villages, productive agricultural areas and significant natural bushland — all within easy reach of central Hobart.
One of Clarence’s greatest strengths is its lifestyle.
Our city is home to beautiful beaches and foreshores, the Meehan Range and extensive bushland reserves, sporting grounds, parks, walking and cycling trails, vibrant shopping and business centres and some of Tasmania’s most recognisable places.
From Bellerive Oval and Kangaroo Bay to Richmond and the Coal River Valley, from Seven Mile Beach to South Arm, Clarence has a character all its own.
But what makes Clarence special isn’t simply its location. It’s the people who live here.
Our suburbs and communities have strong local identities, supported by sporting clubs, schools, community organisations, volunteers and local businesses that contribute enormously to the life of our city.
Clarence continues to grow and change.
New housing and population growth are creating opportunities, but they also bring challenges. As our community grows, we need to make sure that roads, sporting facilities, public transport, parks, community facilities and essential services keep pace.
We also need to protect the things that make people want to live here in the first place — our coastline, natural environment, heritage, public open spaces and sense of community.
Getting that balance right will be one of the most important challenges facing Clarence over the coming decade.
